Formula

- = fuel consumption (L/100 km) × fuel price per litre
- Fuel cost per km
- = fuel consumption (L/100 km) × fuel price per litre ÷ 100
L/100 km is the litres needed for 100 km, so multiplying it by the price per litre gives the cost of 100 km. Dividing by 100 gives the cost of one kilometre.
Worked example
Your car uses 6.5 L/100 km and fuel costs 1.70 per litre.
Step 1: Fuel cost per 100 km
6.5 × 1.70 = 11.05
Step 2: Fuel cost per km
11.05 ÷ 100 = 0.1105
Every kilometre costs about 0.1105 in fuel, or 11.05 per 100 km, in whichever currency the price was given.
Fuel cost only
This calculator currently works out the fuel cost per kilometre. It does not include depreciation, insurance, maintenance, repairs, tyres, tax, finance, parking or tolls, so it is not the total cost of owning or running a car. The total cost per kilometre is higher.
What the fuel cost per kilometre is useful for
A single per-kilometre figure makes fuel costs easy to compare and share:
- Comparing cars: the cost per km puts cars with different consumption on the same footing at today's fuel price.
- Sharing costs: a per-kilometre fuel rate is a simple way to split fuel fairly for a shared or borrowed car.
- Pricing a trip: multiply the cost per km by the trip distance to estimate the fuel cost, or use the fuel cost calculator.
It does not depend on distance
The fuel cost per kilometre depends only on consumption and price, not on how far you drive. A long trip and a short one cost the same per kilometre if the consumption is the same. In practice, short trips with a cold engine and stop-start traffic usually raise consumption, which raises the cost per kilometre.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate fuel cost per km?
Multiply your fuel consumption in L/100 km by the price per litre, then divide by 100. For example, 6.5 L/100 km at 1.70 per litre is 6.5 × 1.70 ÷ 100 = 0.1105 per km.
Does this include insurance, maintenance or depreciation?
No. It calculates the fuel cost per kilometre only. Depreciation, insurance, maintenance, repairs, tyres, tax and other costs are not included, so the full cost of running a car per kilometre is higher.
How do I get the fuel cost per mile?
Multiply the cost per kilometre by 1.609344, because one mile is exactly 1.609344 km.
